My take on electives for specialization - Part 1 (Finance)

Semester III is over, capstone project has been submitted, semester IV looks very interesting... While the final semester of the MPE course is picking up pace, it's decision time (at least for few folks). Should we do specialization? If yes, in Finance or in Marketing (The only two offerings of NMIMS for MPE students)?

While I am still undecided, I took a first swipe at reviewing course content of electives offered in Finance specialization. For me, criteria for selection are:

  • Prior Knowledge (What do I already know about the subject? Don't want to repeat the same stuff)
  • Quality of content / how interesting it is?
  • Relevance of the content (based on aspired job profile

Here is how the 16 electives offered by the institute fare in my rough analysis.

This gives me my top 6 electives:

  1. Financial Risk Management
  2. Portfolio & Capital markets
  3. Fixed Income Securities
  4. Treasury & Operational Risk Management
  5. Investments Decisions in Banking
  6. Retail Banking & Priority Sector Advances OR Financial Institutions & Markets

I would love to get your views on this...

hey!It was nice knowing that you are quite interested in going forward with specialization....as ever. These are good subjects that you have chosen, rather the only good stuff in the list provided by our college.

But why only finance ..why not marketing ..????its a nice subject too and yar I thought you will oblige me by posting electives for that too.

By the way, I am looking forward for specialization into marketing, its the only thing which interests me.

What abt the others????Any comment?

hey look who is blogging!!! Good to see you back on blog, Neelu...

Well, I was planing to write on electives for marketing also. But, we ended up talking about it in college. Someone from our group or class summed it up by saying that each chapter of Marketing Management (Trim I) is a subject for specialization:-)

You may have a great company in Nitin and Munira, who I guess are considering that option.

Thanks Jyoti for the inputs.

4 out of 6 subjects recommended by your friend were in my list. The other two suggested by him are:

1. Credit Risk Management
2. Strategic Cost Management

Dr. CDG has covered important topics from both of these subjects already. So, I would still see if following subjects make sense-

1. Investments Decisions in Banking
2. Financial Institutions & Markets
3. Retail Banking & Priority Sector Advances

Hi everbody,
First time ever I am visiting our blog.
Rajesh I have seen the subject you have preferred but I believe instead we should consider these subject for specialisation:-
Credit Appraisal & Monitoring
Credit Risk management
Strategic Cost management
Seeing the today scenario these subjects will help us to understand the sustainability of the market as well as the corporates.
This will help us in future to think about our own venture with great sustainability in it
Fixed Income securities knowledge can be generated by our own.
